My thoughts turned to dyeing nine lately. Creating a whole cloth base to work on. A dyed version of patchwork perhaps. I have done some playing before, and plan to do more over the winter. But I like the simplicity of this floating version.
My method is based on a traditional shibori technique known as itajime. First introduced to me by Glennis Dolce. I decided to adapt this age old technique for my love of nine.
I learned most of what I know about indigo from Glennis and from the instructions provided on the Maiwa site. Trial and error until I understood it enough to make it work. I often grow Japanese indigo and make a fresh leaf vat. But last year I lost my plants to a fungus that attacked the garden because of too much rain. And this year I didn't feel like I needed the vat.
The small piece I pinned to the center on my blog today was dyed the same way over a single layer of old stained sheer linen. It seems a bit like a dirty window.
