And patchwork as appliqué.
A favorite alternative method I developed early on.
The patch is done with a very dark indigo.
Old cloth from Japan.
So so deep it seems black.
I did the appliqué stitching with one strand of white embroidery thread.
I used this applique/patchwork idea on several large quilts that I have no photos of.
The tops looked like traditional piecing. This works well when there is a lot of open space in the design.
For reference...Practice simple turned applique.
Tip. If you don't get the stitches close enough on the first round or need to refine the edge, you can come back for another round of stitches at any time and stitch in between the first set. I do this a lot. Less worry. Just stitch.
