what if #77: see through patchwork

See_though_patchwork well it was what if (?) i use sheer fabric in patchwork this time... the seam allowances are usually the issue here, i plan to iron and tack the seam allowance toward the opaque fabric to clean the window edges... this is cool and merits more experimenting. and then what if (?) the batting is something to be seen as a shadow effect behind the window....oh gosh you could go on and on......

3.5" square block cut and dirty dyed from old sheer linen embroidered napkin.

for applique version go here.

looking at the size of the blocks makes me realize you must have TINY little hands ...

What a wonderful idea- and beautifully executed.

A pocket for buttons?

I have a dress with organza squares sewn down with buttons and silk flowers inside. You could do something like that- put organza or tulle as the back and float stuff in the middle to be seen

hey thanks for the ideas, something like this could make a great curtain, imagine the sun coming through....oh yeah!

I like how some of the korean and japanese quilts I have seen really emphasize the transparency of the cloth.
http://www.yoshikoquilt.com/ and her book Quilt Artistry are so gorgeous.

This reminded my of an unlined patchwork that Kaffe Fasset did in his book patchwork. The colours are vibrabt jewel colours, and when the sun shone through the fabric the darker seams make the quilt look like stained glass. loveley effect.

Oooh, cool. You could paint the batting to add a wash of color to the block. Or cut a window in the batting and backing so it's as transparent as it is now. So many great ideas!

I like the way you've incorporated the translucent fabric with the opaque. I made a door curtain printing with the computer on silk organza and joining pieces with French seams to trap all those stray threads. I've had it in mind to have a go doing the Korean Pojagi 'properly' following diagrams in Japanese quilt books and a kit bought in a Tokyo (the fabric is translucent ramie)
For inspiration recommend the book 'Rapt in Colour' and for instructions http://www.korea-e.jp/index.htm. It's in Japanese but the diagrams are very clear.

this one does inspire a lot of possibility...and paula-ionce put an old ulined patchwork over a lampshade...check this out http://www.flickr.com/photos/joodles/269347182/in/set-72157594295174859/

why not? and I love the cross stitch japanese lantern piece w/the wonky star.
