what if #91: indian style patchwork

Indian_style_patchwork_1 again i am looking for a freer style, patchwork with out seams, something to recycle scraps and thread ends, something portable. what if (?) Indian_patchwork_2 i use torn rag strips, couched down over ragged edge patches? that is what i asked myself. marker grid (2" boxes) on double layer of linen. overcast patches in alternate boxes. ragged torn scraps 1/2 wide. backstitched first straddling the edge line. over-casted and pulled into place. also tried 2 strips twisted. more potential i think here for decorating the dividers. what if #89: soft edge diced dots

Interrupted_dots actually i am not sure what the question was, but i was inspired by some paint leftovers and i tried some softer edge discharge on indigo with soft scrub, continued from here but i used wet fabric and no stencil. and then i sliced and re-pieced, because i was thinking what if (?) i did that, probably left over from some other thought. at the same time i was wondering what if (?) i pressed the seams outward instead of to one side. i did that and now i am wondering if (?) this side wouldn't be interesting to work with.Open_seams

what if #85: free pieced frames

Framing ....i have been focused on edges lately and i just wondered if (?) the frame could be an interesting theme for a quilt block. each block here is 5" square. i am turning all seams into the frame , figuring that if (?) i quilt only the background, the framing will raise up a bit with the extra padding.

what if #83: quilting with fringe

Silk_fringe Silk_fringe_folded ...i have started using fringe as an edge treatment in my new quilt.  the fringe is recycled from old silk scarves.  some of it is rather sparse so i was wondering what if(?) i double it up before inserting it under the applique. Fringe_insert folding it so that is offset gives it more fullness. Silk_fringe_combined and if you have two, it can be multi-colored... hmmm... what if (?) you use 3 or 4?

what if #68: burned fabric

today i was wondering ...what if i burn holes in fabric? Burned_and_smoked_muslin_over_musli
6x6"
smoked and burned muslin over muslin.
washed.
amazingly the smoke and char stays fast.
Print_under_burned_cotton i've already started playing with the idea of sliding printed or drawn images between the layers. something ancient about it. what if i use this technique for february's TIF?

what if #64: seam wrapping

Seam_wrapping_2Seam_wrapping_detail mending methods have my interest at the moment. i am still working with the vintage piece i started in the previous post. i should mention i quickly dipped it in in brown dye to disguise some staining. some of  hand stitch seams have pulled apart so i thought what if (?) i wrap the seam in a bar of satin stitch. in this case i am going all the way through and catching the backing fabric. i used one layer of thin cotton batting and gauze so i could really get a feel for the tension created. the stitch forms a gully type line on the back and fits in with regular quilting. the method is decorative and very reinforcing. not to mention the texture. and again, quilting and embroidery become one step.Seam_wrapping_back_3    Seam_wrapping_in_progress

what if #59: part 2-log cabin with a view

Log_cabin_with_a_view the snowy window needed to be framed/edged and since log cabin style piecing is easy and fun, i asked myself what if i use strips of neutrals reminiscent of  plaster and wallpaper to expand this block, a log cabin with a window in the center?

i seem to have unexpected time to sit and stitch so what if i quilt this all over and see how it looks before considering any further decoration? i will need to add a backing fabric for stability, muslin i guess, and no batting. i have a nest of neutral thread scraps. i will use those. and what if i vary the amount of strands for the quilting? more texture.
18" x18" so far. in the back of my mind i am asking myself what if i try this log cabin with a view as a quilt, smaller blocks, many little windows? maybe these blocks could be a nice border with regular log cabin blocks in the center. maybe maybe maybe.

what if #53: part 5

A_little_respect ok. this one sat around for a while all coiled up waiting to become the holder for something, and i couldn't get going with it. it needs to hold more was the felling i got and i had plans to extend it a bit. it sat. and then i though what if i extend it using an old shirt placket? an indigo shirt. a beautiful ready made edge with holes. button holes. buttonhole are always good for something. so that's what i did. and for some of the raveling edges i thought what if i just mend them with satin stitch,,, solid indigo.... and tack them down with that magic blue? nice. (left, by the needle) . when it gets a bit bigger i will coil it up again and see what it will hold. i need a bottom edge.

what if #42: study 3-part 2

Dot_study_3what if i experiment with all kinds of fabrics for the dots? the dots are the only unifying element. i am also experimenting  with handing small applique with in a border. (fussy fit )

scanned image:

freehand drawn dots outlined with split backstitch, turned applique dots, cut large so that turning under provides padding.

7" x 7" overall

dots are in general about 1/2"
