what if#75: reworked patchwork

Mp1 when i first started using the sewing machine i pieced a lot of small pieces to test effects. and this one worked fine but it was just plain and too much like what's out there. so i though what if i dirty dye it? ok. it was different but i was still bored until i wondered what about cutting it up and weaving it with some discharged black corduroy? and now, even though it is only basted. i like it. a lot.Dye_and_weave

what if #69: part 2-on loom quilting

On_loom_quilting this patchwork weaving trial (continued from) has gone well. stretching the strips on a frame (an old picture frame) holds everything in place nicely. as opposed to this method.i actually thought what if i just quilt it while it is still on the loom. it was very easy to handle and stabilize this way. this is a small piece, 6" x 12" , to be used as part of a lion applique over here, but i can think of many more things to do with this going forward.

Off_loom after the piece was removed from the loom. it held together just fine without a backing. i am excited with the feel, the texture and the possibilities.

and there is a survey going on over on the other blog, in case you don't visit there.

what if #65: whipping a machine stitch

what if #25: integrated applique-part 2

integrated applique is meant to describe a process of applying one fabric to another, and making them one by defining some sort of relationship between the two elements. I3 i have picked the meeting point. a color and motif element that seems common to both. i will start here and try to work out the rest of the edges with some sort of sympathy to the observed harmony that seem to exist here. at least to me.

there are many ways to "weave" things together

what if#25: integrated applique in silk

quite a while ago i attempted to  weave an appliqué into the ground fabric and was happy with the results.

Silk_scenery_2 i am inspired by this little scrap of silk that came out of an old swatch book. slightly glue stained. it is calling to me in some way to be integrated into #24. the colors are similar and i am wondering IF i can work this in some how using that weaving process. i am treading on thin ice here i think.

as an extra what-if to this adventure, i would like to note to myself that it might be interesting IF i start a digital archive of all antique and interesting fabrics in my collection. an inspiration depot.

what if #20: indigo thing revisited

after rag weaving with indigo on # 11, i wondered if i could use different patterns to form woven blocks. this time i used a  washed down and sun faded indigo dyed velvet and made various slits in sections, varying the fabric patterns used for the weaving. i think if i plan it out more carefully i can form patterns this way. #11: indigo thing

what if i weave indigo torn strips into an existing indigo base? Rag_weaving i made slits in the base to weave the rag strips in.  indigo fabric tears nicely with nice color variation on the edges. i chose indigo thread to quilt with and a contrasting brown DMC, 2 strands to tie the woven strips.  (although this can be reversible,  i framed this as a center panel and backed it with a double layer of gauze, wondering if i could use some fussy cut borders from an old indigo batik) liking it... and now wondering if i can create a refashioned antique by recycling scraps of authentic ethnic fabrics. patching them together for a new look.  details to be published in next post.

#8: ragged woven foundation patchwork

H3 -the quilt weaving process is very manageable in such a small piece.

-the torn ragged edge frays less than the cut version.

-the web has some stability of its own

-the web is pinned and then basted to a very light weight foundation to avoid extra bulk.(targeted for appliqué)

-the basting also doubles as quilting.

-some decorative corner tacking experiments have inspired more work in this area.

-nice drape is achieved because of the woven aspect.

-velvet work well as a textural touch.

-a nice way to use trimmings and leftovers.

-appliqué trial will be posted on Spirit Cloth blog, link added here after completion.
