the crane panel has been started by using an existing print ( which I have used before). i had one piece left with 2 birds on it. i planned to applique over the center 9 squares in the lava section. it was only big enough to cover 14" out of the 18".... so i am doing a 2" patchwork border all around, alternating light and dark indigo dyed linen squares. in the meantime i need to secure the center section with base quilting so it is stable for the applique. the patchwork crane section will be completed during my back home train tride. the quilting of the center will be a before bed project.
once placed, some reverse applique will allow the lava to seep through. i will probably have to do this part at home because working on the middle of a quilt on a train is not easy. with all the layers though, the "pinch" method may work. i will try to document that later.
