it is a dreary day. as i continue my thoughts on positive negative i am working with two styles of dots. one is the empty space, the hole ( from what if #162 ) .
and the other the solid mass. sphere like.
... i also like the idea of dots as fasteners. connecting things in the process of filling a space that wasn't even there before.

this morning i uncurled from a restful sleep. it was quite early, before the first bird sang. i was thinking about how good it feels to be rested. i was thinking about that fuzzy state ( thank you Karen). in a fuzzy state everything melts together. the edges are softened and focus is somewhat lost and regained as bigger picture. i remembered the roof dots, soft spots, my friend velvet... and i remembered how we grow.
a bit of green velvet (now the keeper of the fuzzy state) changed everything. it is obvious to me now that the center of a gentle and productive journey is a soft spot. a place to rest.

yesterday i added some edges to that map for a soft journey. on the back a border of soft corduroy strips to pad the edge from behind ...a then a soft green and pink binding...a gifted hand dye with the unevenness of a blush. that blush. maybe a result of the rush that comes from the excitement of a new adventure and possibility. but then again and most likely the blush of fear or anxiety about reaching the end and being disappointed. what ever it was...i didn't sleep at all last night.
this piece hovered over me like a ghost keeping me from my dreams. it is incomplete some how. and i cannot solve my problem today. i am too tired. and i still can't sleep because i cannot solve this problem. so it goes. later...

this most unusual night beast is almost complete. he/she? ( who could tell?) is built in reverse. the background is formed around the image. i used the same method for shy. snips of fabric are attached ragged mosaic style to create the background leaving the image as a single layer.
when it gets too fussy i fake it by filling in the gaps with stitch. overall, the effect is just fun and carefree and from a distance it is hardly noticeable. especially if it is night time. ha!
i have named this one and backed it with a floral chenille corduroy. so it is a not so much thin cloth but a very soft one.
...and there is a soft spot. that same velvet to mark the moon's shadow. it is soft because that is the way i imagine it would be.

today i interrupt the regularly scheduled activity for some real real time make-do and a short break from hand stitching. a little quick cloth. a moment when you have to appreciate the sewing machine. a modern day boro experience...
if you think this patch is ugly you should have seen the hole. now that was the real kodak moment.

i have adopted one of the roof dots and will bring it inside to make a small terrarium. it is so soft and welcoming. it contains something comforting and reassuring ...like this and this and now i am watching this. is that certain something we like so much about velvet...perhaps a reminder of a mossy place to rest?
... i am finishing up the second stepping stone piece which i have renamed a map for a soft journey. a bit more velvet was added...a circular mask allowing the original markings to show through, so it is a dot with a soft frame. a soft spot in reverse. my son brought me this piece of vintage velvet as a gift when he returned from a cross country trip. it is a gorgeous textile and this gift has made the soft spot in my heart for him a little larger.
(a lot of the little soft spots i have for the work of others show up in the i really like this spot in my sidebar. maybe you will like them too).

...it has been impossible to clean this section of the studio window without destroying this wonderful thin cloth that formed just outside. i noticed this morning that autumn's first leaf has been caught and suspended there. natures new story cloth is growing.
...later i got a good look at the keeper of this cloth. she/ he? seemed to be mocking me....
...it is another lazy hazy day. i am working on my own thin cloth.
...a lazy hazy day is just the right kind of day to catch the right piece to build a wing. sometimes it just shows up without looking. it just seems to drift into the right place where it makes sense. isn't that amazing?
