i am liking corners as a key element of squares, i have chosen to rotate the square in another square to create more corners. and to create motion. a frame yet not static.
and then again... i like the spin, and the relationship to that old amish simplicity of design. playing with the familiar. tradition. but using that to confuse my direction. i think a magic trick uses the expected as a diversion. there is a velvet patch from dianne cransac in there. some of glennis's moons form the corners of the nine patch. tiggy rawling dyed the fabric for the second set of corners.
the third set of corners was created with an incredible cloth. a medium weight cotton checkerboard created with indigo and an unstable black. both dyes fade and distress beautifully. this is an idea conceived back in my fabric design days, a thousand years ago... it has magical properties...and i will be sure to take advantage of that....
the piece now measures about 25" square. and it is on a glass table top for basting... (actually the glass from an old skylight placed atop a cedar chest, the basting / coffee / dining table in front of the tv thing)....i will work flat at this point. just to attach everything. then i can play and make the corners disappear. maybe.
i am amused by the fact that this is already a magic carpet. the materials are being collected from the four corners of elsewhere..... this will be a journey in terms cloth as well as illusion.
(i don't buy much but when i do i like to support other artists, all the people i buy fabric from are listed in my side bar)
