Spirit Cloth

September moves me

A great feeling of energy returned today. Even though company lingers. I pinned a few things to a special cloth.  Do you have some of Deb's cloth?. It'll knock you over. Vintage, soft, full of energy and heart, just like the maker. A gift really, a real deal. And I am sure she will appreciate the support. That's the real great thing about gift giving. It's like a kind of basket that might hold us all. If we let it.

Nice and Old

A beautiful  cloth from Indonesia. 

Very striking with the combination of warp ikat and discontinuous supplementary weft  patterning.

This textile , like a few I have here combines both natural and synthetic dyes.  The natural colors have faded greatly in contrast. And changed the look of the cloth over time.

Handwoven. With an interesting personal asymmetric and imperfect approach to patterning. I've always loved that. It holds the story of the maker.

Now older and well loved. 

Which makes it even nicer.

 

I have neglected ThreadCrumbs, the place I made to document my cloth collection.  Because cloth inspires cloth. In this year of renewed UnDoing, I will be further lessening the piles here and sorting and consolidating, with not so future plans for relocating. And so also documenting will continue before I forget the stories of the bits of cloth that are still here. I need to clean up this process, fix links, fix photos, change the format a little, make it useful as a resource. 

This cloth, along with a lot of others, is huge.  I need to clear some wall space for photos.  Soon. As the weather warms.

 

 

Vibration

  I have always loved  Glennis's shibori ribbon.  How it holds her generous and energetic spirit.   How it connected us.   Good Vibrations.  It is perfect for this sense of something I feel.  I will use the scraps I have here to  add the vibration element to this cloth I call Home.  Which will give the cloth the feel I need and  add life to the basket's  rings in some gentle liquid way. Filling the space with flow. This ribbon I have is indigo dyed , light as a feather and conforms beautifully to the curves.  I have a lot more to say about quilting with silk, but I will be considering that later.

Living with color and cloth

It's September.

I am glad I decided to grow madder here.  Even though it is takng a while to establish plants.  Because I love the red,  that old red.   I look around at all the cloth I live with.  All that red.  Can't help but wonder how it was dyed.

And why. 

Meanwhile, it is unseasonably hot.  I am patiently waiting for the Walnuts to fall.  And thinking about trend as a form of imbalance.  A most dangerous business model.  Small business is more human.  The business of living.

 

In this year I became old, I reconsider season.  How one thing moves into another.  How to appreciate that without  the desire to control it.

What is What If?

I just want to talk about it,  this thing I now call What If Diaries(?).    It is not a class, it is more like a resource.   It is a lot of things.   Scraps of self.   There are steps to be taken to  have this Happen.  Layers.  But firstly, I will be reopening my What If (?)  blog, under a new name, The What If Diaries.  Starting over actually,  in a way.  Consider it a Gateway.   I look at it as a kind of  treasure hunt.     Because that is how it all happened for me,  still happening actually... a journey in self discovery and I am just telling the story.

The  What If  blog  is not restricted.   It is open to all.  Like a door.   I cleaned it up and updated it a bit... and it will reopen  with the New Year.   And then we begin.  Again.  And keep going. 

Along with the reopening of What If,  I will be closing the shop.   Because how I will be doing that  will be changing as well.    In fact,  Everything will be different.   Too much sameness out there.   Doing the shake it up dance here.   You?

Gentle beauty

Yellow

Even on cloudy days, nature provides a pick me up.   A sunny day stored up  for when you need it.

And then there is sunshine from Heike.    A gentle smile in cloth.   She manages to package a bit of kindness with her cloth.   You can feel it.

I've been working some yellow through blue.   They go well together.

 

feather friday in november

while walking i came upon some leaves.  at the same time i was thinking of feathers.

then i thought        

leaves of a feather might float together. 

deb's dyed cloth is perfect for colored leaves. her spirit and generosity are like the seasons to me. i am creating a category for resource, rather than a page. this way  you can see how i use the products in my own work.  makes more sense to me. i will go back through my old posts to link them....
