On this clear quiet day in May, after a bit of dream catching and life getting in the way, I have begun the ground cloth for the first Magic Feather Cloth. I have gathered some sky cloth, indigo, some dyed by Glennis, and some dyed by me, (after taking her class where she shared her secrets so freely). I think it is a good start, an open space based on sharing. A combination of thin cotton and linen. Soft and light. Space . Place. A new beginning. A sense of Old Sky.
This blog will now be dedicated to this project. For as long as it takes. For those of you who have contributed feathers to this project, please email me if you see your feather featured here as the story unfolds. I want to add a bit more information about you to the journal that will accompany this gift. You can email me using the link in the sidebar.
There are so many feathers, I think we have the makings of many cloths. So I will just keep going until I use them up. To balance the lightness of sky and feather, I will need some stones, as mentioned here. I am looking for something tiny and simple. Like the one picture above. Just a 1- 2" square of cloth, natural fibers only. With a stone ( never a perfect circle) applique in the center. The applique needs to be turned. Like this.
Please keep the colours stone-like in feel and the background undyed or neutral/naturally dyed or blue. Soft or old cloth that is easy to stitch through would be nice. You might make one or more . Email me for an address if you don't have it already. There is no rush and no deadline.
Please include your email address Your name as you would like to be listed for the project Website or blog if you have one. Anything else you would like to say.
Feel free to grab the logo for this project for you blog or site if you are participating. Or just spread the word. If you are not familiar with this project, you can read about it here. There is also a tab up top in the top menu bar, and stone tracking and instruction in the sidebar for reference.
It is Friday. Now officially Feather Friday. Finally. How to gather the Magic Feathers together in some unified way has really been my dilemma. I think that the circle is the best. The Ring. I have decided to use Indigo sky cloth, dyed ala Glennis style, to act as a base . And to leave a space in the center for sitting or standing or simply gazing. I haven't really chosen placement yet, this is just a cloth sketch to get an idea of how it will feel. And stones. I think there will be stones. If you are interested in stitching a stone, I will be gathering them soon as well (details soon). I am creating a separate place where the story will gather. There will be a link to that soon here on the blog. I just took a deep breath because this feels good. Yes.
There are more thoughts of sympathetic evolution today. How we might change ourselves, willingly. To keep natural order on purpose. What if we become the missing piece?. By giving up a bit of ourselves. Imagine that. I like to imagine that. Becoming more by needing less. Making a difference could be that simple really.
Set in stone. At least that is what I have planned. Doodled at the moment because it is Wednesday. Maybe a small series. Just to see how these things might fit together in sympathy with one another.
There are stones everywhere actually. They have just crept in as some sort of anchor. To keep me grounded.
As the year comes to a close I want to thank all of you traveling companions for continuing with me, keeping me company in whatever way you have. Thank you for visiting, your humor, your concern, you comments and stories. It all makes my journey here so much richer.
This is the center of the magic cloth 2. The cloth I began in Magic Diaries, among some special friends. Still in process, its center is a ring of stones, perhaps a medicine wheel of sorts. A special heart felt thank you to those of you who volunteered as lab rats as I pulled together this little dream of Diary teaching style. It has really made a difference for me and I certainly couldn't have done it without your support.
With some regrets, I announce that the SEW forum has been closed to the public as of this week. It was a nice idea to open it but in the end, the intimacy of a close community has proved a more useful teaching tool as well as a warmer learning environment. I made this change after slowly considering current students and the nature of the internet and my own focus. Although it may exclude a few folks from looking in, it has opened new opportunity for the ring of vision that gathers there. SEW is now the student forum connected to the Diaries Series. They are seamlessly connected as we continue with our story cloth. A large cloth is like a community in a way. A gathering of scrap, story and intention into some kind of natural order. Over time it can become shelter from the storm. Today I am wrapped in community, appreciating the warmth it provides. And still continuing.
My presence here will be thinner through the holiday (photos mostly and posting the rest of the gathered feathers). I wish you all a peaceful transition.
this piece is small. but it seems bigger, that's how i see it today.

i have added Debra Price's blog, Artisun to the sidebar list titled Tell the Children the Truth. Debra organized a teacher's blog, showing the work of her students. I think this is such a great idea... a classroom is like a ring of vision isn't it? Nice to see teaching and learning spinning out there in this big space of an internet.
If you are a teacher and have organized a blog focused around your students creative efforts, and would like to be listed here, please let me know.
I am thinking today that perhaps the ring might be a great place to start in putting all my magic feathers together. Today a ring could be a big hug-like thing.
( Debra and class donated feathers 409-422 and they floated over here in October)

thinking about rings in perspective.
and looking back at the year of the dot. to understand the difference. because the ring goes way back.

as a note, the cloth whispering page has become a monthly newsletter to keep you updated with my teaching and shop schedule. there is a link in the upper right hand corner of this blog.
perhaps very old stones might be light enough to ride on the wind. memories of stones perhaps. if you wait long enough, the past becomes soft and thin and lighter. easier to see through.
these simple stone fragments. they catch me. i intended to put a leaf (or two) on this one. but the moon fell in my path last night. a late night walk with no wind.
each square is a special scrap of cloth. little things i have picked up along the way. cloth has been a path for me. it is startling sometimes to realize how much it has paved my way. i suppose i am just patching that story together as best i can.
today there is big wind. and there are leaves on everything.
