Applique is another option for making a magic feather. These are some I did a while back using turned applique. Just practicing a bit for some additions to my Magic Cloth quilt which I am still working on.
There is a lot that can be done, simply by playing with the patterns in fabric.... like stripes.
This is so simple, no stress, no extra seam buildup to stitch through, just a light hearted approach.

The basic applique stitch is a tiny overcast.

You can also simply play with the print in a fabric and cut selectively around leaves and what not to find decorative elements so you need not embroider at all. The examples were turned, but they could be ragged. Or both.
