This week was like Fog

There is big heat coming this weekend. 

Humidity is already building.

Every night I fold the Holding Cloth. Puzzle side out.  To rest.  Every morning now, I spread it out to continue coating of the other side around the already quilted center

My basket of thread ends and pins has become a knot of stuff. I will sit and address that when it gets too hot to move.

This table is 72" across and this cloth is much bigger. I am not going to measure it. I know it is big enough.

I was rather disappointed that I did not have enough indigo dyed silk scrap to do the border. Not a problem really.  I have rummaged through to find bluish greenish thin cloth and I am making do. Not silk but thin and fluid. Using up a lot of cloth on this one and that's fine with me.  I just want to get everything in place so I can quilt this one once the weather begins to cool. Maybe fireside if we can get the chimney fixed. Finish it before year's end. 

I sent my son a text. He is working so hard and seemed way overwhelmed when I talked to him last.  I asked, u ok? u seem overwhelmed. I got no answer for a day. Felt worried. Then, suddenly early this morning... I am both OK and overwhelmed.  That was just heartwarming.

Life is thin

A small life.

Held in a man's hands. (there they are again, those hands.)

We didn't get a chance to consider what to do.

There was a wound on the neck, not initially noticed.  Probably the cat, I posted that on Instagram.  

I buried  the small feathered being wrapped in rose petals.  Someone commented. Cats are Killers. Keep cats caged. I said. Cats are Cats.

Life is thin.

Held together by a thread.

Maybe that's why I like thin cloth. It reminds me.  How things might hold together.

Some of you might know about my love affair with thin cloth.  There are many kinds, but for years I used Harem Cloth, mostly as an under-layer, but it's no longer available from the supplier. I still have some here, bits and pieces which is all I need.  But Grace has found herself with a bit more of it that she can offer up  if you need some, she is offering it by the yard, in her shop.  She will cut what you need.  You can email her ( right click on the "email me" link in the sidebar of her blog to copy her email address) if you'd like a bit to try.  Wash it first.  I cut it to the size I need and soak it in a bowl of hot water. Hang it to dry.

Mo's pennant project, coming along...

I stitched a piece of old Japanese silk to the pennant. Stitched around the edge and then across here and there  to stabilize.  Then I cut away two sections. Leaving a bit of a skeleton. The old  cloth supports another old cloth. One softening the other. And I felt a sense of transparency was good here. Love  needs that.   I will use very sheer cloth to complete this.  To make sure the light continues to move through.

The Day After

Thanksgiving here has become a quiet fasting day.

Some people think we are no fun.  Fun has become more personal over the years.

Two blankets are forming. Now both about the same size. Nest of Days. Holding Pattern (aka Eventually).

Once upon a time they almost became one. But it wasn't meant to be. I took them apart the next day. Still, they are related. Still, that feeling of surprise is in the back of my mind. Still, the unexpected is present in both of them.

 

For Holding Pattern, I am patching a thin catch layer to the other side as I go. In this case it will be the batting. And a stabilizer for some embellishment.  It is handy to be able to see the grid through this layer. Which will become apparent later. The cloth here is an old cotton lining from something, but that's all I have so I will use the thinnest cloth I have laying around in order to continue. The outer ring just added, is still one layer.

I will surely be away from the blog in December. Mostly. Preparing the move of Feel Free to it's new home. Wandering here and there. Still stitching.

This cloth is being built by Working Outward. And I will be cutting away some of the cloth behind the center woven component to even things out.  I often decide to do this based on how the cloth feels. The drape of it.

But let me talk about Lightness...

To see through things is to know them better.

When Spring Comes Early

Awakenings.

No doubt about it.

 

I stitched this yesterday.

This time I took the foundation approach.  But I cobbled it more or less. Invisibly basting as I went alog. Ha! Along. Sometimes folding the edge under. (A seam is just a fold after all. Consider it as simple as that.) Sometimes not.  I used a VERY thin foundation. (an old cotton lawn blouse fragment, worn thinner...) So I would not compromise the feel of it.  What I never liked about foundation piecing was that. The feel of it.  So a Sun Cabin... collage. Easy going patchwork. A design mended into being.

Today a flag for an early spring. The sense of home, warmth,  in that.

Thank for all your comments on my last post. I am still working on the Travelling (I really like the double L version) Companions list. I suppose it will be ever changing. Like the ways things go.

Later... there is no way I will be staying inside today.

I use up a lot of small thread ends in this process.

I made 2 of these and decided i liked this one better. I offered it up over at Threadcrumbs but before I could mention it here it was gone. I think sharing this was a way to share the feel. The sense of the stitch, the layering. The Oneness. The Living-ness.

I have begun to fill in what's missing at Feel Free. To better build the library. I have created another new page. STITCH - Invisible Baste aka Glue Stitch. Here I can collect many of the associated videos over the years. As well as organize my thoughts about this technique.  Even though a lot of my videos are part of classes, I will be indexing them separately by technique. Easier to reference I think. Even for me.
